Soul Census
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
What makes Soul Census so special you ask? The musicians switch it up, trading instruments throughout their performance. There's a lot going on and you never know when they might just pull out an instrumental improvisation. One moment they're playing blues, the next its reggae with a little R&B, or something totally unrehearsed.

The band consists of six members. Whitney Marie is a powerful vocalist and songwriter. Whitney's voice can fill a stadium and her lyrics will give you goosebumps as you feel every word she sings. T'Slick, or "T" as he likes to be called, is a powerhouse musician who plays drums, keys, guitar, and sings all the while. T's vocals will shake you and rock your world. Paulie B. is our keyboard player. Paul started by learning classical piano then moved on to guitar, bass, and drums. Paul is also a main songwriter in our music. Mark plays bass without effort. He is the yin and the yang, and he doesn't speak a lick of English. Kane Kerley is our lead guitar player. His solos are driven with pure energy. Peter Floyd is nicknamed the Bar Chord master. Peter plays rhythm guitar, percussion, and switches to drums.

Mighty Shady
OFFICIAL WEBSITE

Gaining momentum in venues across Iowa and the Midwest, Des Moines’ Mighty Shady— Eric McCoy, Chris Freier, Jared Murphy, Joel Schwitchtenberg, and Keenan McBroom—were busy last summer playing national festivals including Wakarusa and 80/35 Music Festival, as well as a handful of regional festivals including Adventure Camp, Dangerfest, Briar Patch, Shwagstock, and Little Big Fest. And while these talented musicians find inspiration in the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime, their alt rock is original, seamlessly packing the dance floor with funky grooves. Mighty Shady has been dubbed "indie groove rock" by the locals here in Des Moines, and manages to tastefully combine reggae, rock, and psychedelic jams together in their live performances. Meaningful lyrics add depth to the dynamic group’s draw and have helped build a loyal fan base, one that is sure to explode in 2014 with the highly anticipated release of their first full length album

Equal parts fast-paced and soulful, 5 piece roots/americana band, The Way Down Wanderers, not only draw listeners in with their energy and originality but also captivate fans with their unique and touching story; Banjo player, Ben Montalbano and fiddle/mandolin player, Collin Krause, are half brothers who met each other for the first time 5 years ago. The two were shocked to find that not only were they both pursuing careers in music, but that they were each drawn to the same genres. In addition to their unexpected brotherly collaboration, the other band member's dramatically diverse backgrounds in bluegrass, jazz, classical and rap music, blend together to form unique harmony vocals, soaring instrumentals, lively dynamics and standout melodies.

Rebecca Rego & The Trainmen
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Rebecca Rego and The Trainmen met in Kankakee, Il in the spring of 2012 while working on separate musical projects. Drummer Matt Yeates (who also spends time drumming for indie-folk darlings Ivan & Alyosha and Twin Forks), Upright-bass and mandolin player Eric Fitts, and guitar and banjo player Cory Ponton make up what is now known as The Trainmen. The three are life long friends who have been playing music together since they were teenagers.
Debut record 'Tolono' released February 11, 2014“Tolono” is a train town south of Champaign, IL founded by the Illinois central railroad in the early 19th century. For many years it was mainly home to employees of the railroad and became a featured stop for early rail passengers. Today many of its streets still bear the name of railroad employees. It was purely coincidental that Rebecca Rego and The Trainmen ventured to this small town in July to record their debut record with engineer and producer Matt Talbott (of Hum). In three days they found local musicians to accompany them and recorded everything live to analog tape. The essence of these songs on TOLONO is distinctly Midwest. Rebecca wrote them about the time that she has spent outside of Chicago in smaller towns in Illinois, family stories and the first years of her marriage.

Family Groove Company is a four piece band from Chicago that is turning heads and catching ears with a sound that is uncannily fresh, and live performances that simply envelop audiences in the fun, excitement and passion that the band radiates from the stage. Growing audiences everywhere FGC plays attest to the impact the band is making, as they bring the excitement of their live performances to ever growing venues, in more and more cities across the country. Appearances at most of the Midwest's major music festivals have helped along the way, the band's steady shift from club dates to small theaters and music halls points to the great things to come, and the over 50,000 live CDs that have been distributed and traded all over the country speak for themselves. Family Groove Company is a band that music fans should not miss.

FGC integrates the groove sensibility developed by funk/jazz crossover artists like Herbie Hancock and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, with thoughtful, tight song writing that takes cues from the likes of Steely Dan and the Beatles. The result? An infectious, fresh sound the band calls "groove informed jazz/rock."

Chicago funk/hip-hop group whysowhite released their self-titled debut album in February 2013. During SXSW 2013, whysowhite played several showcases including a supporting set for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Headlining dates at Chicago venues like Subterranean, Double Door and Martyrs followed with a main stage performance at North Coast Music Festival in Chicago.
whysowhite started off 2014 recording a session with Audiotree.TV and releasing a music video for fan favorite "Get Busy." AfroZep

AfroZep originated in 2009 with the mission to spread African music to wider audiences while paying tribute to the greatest Heavy Rock band of all time. Some tunes are straight mash-ups of Fela Kuti and Zeppelin, others are Zep tunes but set to original grooves based off the music of artists such as Tinariwen, Thomas Mapfumo and Franco and others are stripped down Zeppelin arrangements injected with the pulse of traditional African drumming.

Led by Wilson (guitar/vocals), Marshall Greenhouse (drum-kit), and Ryan Behling (bass and lead vocals), AfroZep has consistently been touring since their formation, having played festivals, clubs and universities, which are often coupled with workshops. The group has been gaining major media attention for both their unique take on Led Zeppelin, (Led Zeppelin Cover Band of the Year- Chicago Reader, Led Zeppelin Cover Band of Choice- XRT Radio Chicago) as well as for their contribution to African music. In both 2012 and 2013 the group has received multiple nominations at the Chicago Music Awards (African Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year). Wilson, Marshall and Ryan (which also make up the psychedelic rock trio KAVA) bring years of road experience with them and a rotating all-star cast of musicians they have met along the way that includes some of the countries top traditional West African percussionists and most in-demand rock and jazz horn players.

EOTO
OFFICIAL WEBSITE

The way music is produced and performed is growing at an astounding rate. From the roots of acoustic music to amped up rock n’ roll and into the electronic revolution, the options available to the modern musician are more like a scientific lab, than the campfire jam from where it all started. From the controls of a tiny laptop, a performer now has the power to mix, change and loop sounds in a concert setting with great ease. This modern twist of technology is bringing a new level of music to the electronic dance party.

While the genre of live electronica is relatively new on the music circuit, nobody is breaking the boundaries of live producing and improvisation like EOTO. The band fuses elements of live instrumentation, house music, dubstep and electro into their dance ready sound.

Stepping Into the Hoop & Partner Hooping

This year at Summer Camp we will be mixing the hoop workshops up a bit!  We have been exploring and evolving in the flow arts for a combined total of almost 9 years, teaching together for a little under 2, and were even nominated for a 2013 Hoopie Award for their partner video "Another Day in the Park."  To share our experience with you, we’re offering a wide variety of workshops for all hooping levels.  Friday will be split into two groups, one for those who are new and want to learn more basic single hoop tricks and one for more advanced hoopers who would like to learn the basics of double hooping.  Saturday, one group will have the option to learn partner hooping skills which will show you tricks that incorporate a duo instead of one hooper and the second group will learn to stylize dance, perfect for those wanting to add more personal style into their hoop dance.  On Sunday, the first option is a foot hooping class and the second option will be about power moves and tosses.  In this workshop you will learn tricks to really "wow" your crowd and also some awesome tosses!  Throughout each workshop we will have our hoop fairy helpers there for extra help, as we’re expecting a large group this year!

UM Golden Ticket

Join us Friday, May 23rd at Summer Camp Music Festival for the fourth annual Golden Ticket event, taking place from 1:30-2:30 outside the Soulshine tent. What exactly is the Golden Ticket?

It's your chance to win free tickets for you and a friend to every UM show for a year*. Perhaps you'll snag the Golden Ticket that offers you every poster released thus far in 2014, VIP tickets to our 2014 NYE run, or late-night tickets to the red barn. At a minimum, you'll take home more merch than you paid for. It's like playing the lottery but you're a guaranteed winner.

Here's how it works:

This year, we've partnered with Eagles Nest Outfitters to exclusive create custom bags. Each of these will be stuffed with merch, and every bag's contents will remain a mystery until you have it in your hands! Hidden amongst the bags, will be 20 Golden Tickets alongside a whole host of prizes.

Along with attending every Umphrey's show for a year, a partial list of items that you could find residing in your bag this year also include: t-shirts (in your size!), assorted posters, handbills, vinyl, koozies, stickers, and more. Golden Ticket winnings include: 2 tickets to the 5 shows of your choosing*, photo pit access during Umphrey's set, passes for you and a friend to Summer Camp late night shows in the Red Barn and so much more. Three winners will receive Summer Camp survival kits: bags filled to the brim with everything you didn't know you needed to survive the weekend.

Like last year, we'll be donating a portion of the proceeds to one of Summer Camp's many not-for-profit charities. This year proceeds will once again benefit The Runway to Hope Foundation, a creative anti-bullying campaign focused on music as a great equalizer. Right on. So head over to the Soulshine Tent right before moe.'s set on Friday and join us for the shenanigans. You can't lose.

What: UM Golden Ticket

Where: Summer Camp Festival, in the Soulshine Tent

When: Friday, May 23rd, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

How Much: $30 per bag. No limit.

Why: Because we love you

Funk Trek
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
The funk of the Omaha-based ensemble is something that boils and flows through a century of the urban America’s artistic bloodstream. In six-minute songs dominated by horn pops and bass solos, there’s a range of temperaments that could spark a small-scale high school dance revolt or could send up a nightclub in musical flames with a three-hour set. The technical proficiency simply needs to decide what outfit it wants to wear.
But they are right when the band postulates its songs are “one percent something stanky.” A few rainy afternoon interludes highlight the jazzier side of their effort while horn slurs from an alto and tenor sax and trumpet invoke a hint of swing you won’t find in Parliament Funk or Rick James. It’s not dirty funk by any means. As the album title might suggest, Funk Trek comes to the listening public with a purified second album. If they wanted, they could reprise a Shaft score and they could do it with a hint of Glenn Miller.

Head for the Hills
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Head for the Hills has a simple but continuing dilemma they can’t seem to resolve. Specialists have been hired to no avail and the predicament persists: how does one describe the multifarious music of Head for the Hills? Among the top contenders are catchy turns of phrases like post-bluegrass, progressive string music, modern acoustic noir, and bluegrass bricolage. “On top of modern string music,” (Bluegrass Today), “Cutting edge,” (Drew Emmitt) or “Best in Colorado Bluegrass” (Westword Showcase Readers Poll)—those are up there too. Strip away the artful descriptors and you have a forward thinking group of {mostly} acoustic musicians drawing on eclectic influences, tastes and styles. They didn’t grow up immersed in bluegrass music but came to it later in life, with each other. The result is a sound based in bluegrass that reaches into indie rock, jazz, hip hop, world and folk to stitch together fresh songs that bridge the divide between past and future acoustic music. Head for the Hills—Adam Kinghorn on Guitar and vocals, Joe Lessard on violin and vocals, Matt Loewen on upright bass and vocals and Mike Chappell on acoustic and electric mandolins—has been bringing their music to a multitude of stages in between since 2004. The band has independently issued two studio records and one live, been featured on NPR Ideastream and eTown, co-released a beer with Odell Brewing Company in May 2013 and charted on the CMJ Top 200 (Blue Ruin, 2013 and Head for the Hills, 2010). The Delta Saints are not what they say they are. Delta? Absolutely. But saints? One might call them “cautionary tales” long before the term “saints” ever came to mind; however, there is something devout about their bayou rock, a dirty, distinct sound they’ve zealously refined on their debut full-length, Death Letter Jubilee. Ben Ringel (vocals/dobro), Dylan Fitch (guitar), David Supica (bass), and Ben Azzi (drums) each moved to Nashville for college in 2007 and first found common ground as old-world-loving, good-bourbon-swilling musicians. As the howling vocals and immense energy of their live show began garnering notoriety, The Saints rode their roots rock wave right into the studio. On the heels of 2009’s Pray On EP and 2010’s follow-up A Bird Called Angola, the band toured tirelessly, playing more than 150 shows a year, including a slot at Arkansas’ Wakarusa Festival and two summers headlining in Europe during which they performed on the long-running, renowned German TV show Rockpalast.

Blues Traveler
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Seventeen years after scoring the Grammy Award winning, harmonica laced Billboard Top Ten breakthrough hit that came to define pop music in the mid-90s, Blues Traveler are still finding unique ways to ensure that they don’t give their legion of worldwide fans the “Run-Around.” On their instantly infectious, musically expansive 11th studio album and 429 Records/SLG debut, Suzie Cracks The Whip, they remain creatively focused while dramatically expanding their musical horizons upon celebrating their 25th anniversary as a band.

John Popper (vocals, harmonica), Chan Kinchla (guitars), Tad Kinchla (bass), Ben Wilson (keyboards) and Brendan Hill (drums, percussion) had a blast working for the first time ever with a handful of dynamic outside songwriting collaborators and the powerhouse production team of Sam Hollander and Dave “Sluggo” Katz, aka S*A*M and Sluggo–who have worked their studio magic for everyone from rap rock band Gym Class Heroes to pop princess Katy Perry.

The first questions on everyone’s mind as Blues Traveler breaks ground on quarter century #2 is “Who is Suzie?” and “Where did she get the whip?”

Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Brendan Hill says, “That’s Suzie Shinn, assistant engineer at Killingsworth Studios in Valley Village, California, who is truly the unsung hero on this project. She was awesome, doing it all from vacuuming up our messes at night to jumping into her chair to track our overdubs, and recording us in two rooms at the same time, vocals in one, rhythm section stuff in the other. One day, we had a photo shoot in back of the studio. John Popper, being a bull whip aficionado, was showing one to us and urging Suzie to try it. So we got a great pic of her swinging and cracking it. It was a fun moment that summed up our approach to the whole project, putting all our chips in yet not taking things too seriously. After playing together for so many years, we had another great opportunity to make music together, so we were thinking, ‘Why not celebrate it?’”

Says John Popper: “Using the concept metaphorically, we weren’t cracking the whip on the outside writers we collaborated with on the album as much as they were cracking it on us. Working with them really brought out incredibly creative ideas we didn’t know we had in us. In the past, our concept (at least in our minds) had always been to be like some misguided homage to the Beatles and write and produce everything in house, but as the band progressed it felt like we were drawing from the same well over and over. I love these guys like my family, but after writing the same way with the same people for 25 years, it was good to find a new outlet and take a different approach. Likewise, S*A*M and Sluggo helped remind us about what was cool about Blues Traveler in the first place. It’s easy to forget what’s cool about yourself after so many years of being you.”

One of the ways Blues Traveler shares the joy on Suzie Cracks The Whip is by giving Popper, the band’s poet in chief, an augmentation on the songwriting front, bouncing around song ideas with other writers. Hill describes their typical writing process on most of their albums as an insular, closed-door process of wood shedding amidst themselves. This time, they trekked to Austin, Texas, one of their favorite cities, piled into a studio located in a barn on Red Horse Ranch and narrowed down to a list of five collaborators—most of which brought in rough versions of two or three songs to work from. The formidable A-list yielded impressive material that created the foundation for what Chan Kinchla unabashedly calls “the best all-around record we’ve made since Four. Just like the recording later in L.A., it was a loose fun atmosphere, like a songwriting party. That energy shines through in the music.”

Longtime band friend Aaron Beavers, frontman for the Austin based band, Shurman, contributed the infectious sing-along opener “You Don’t Have To Love Me” and the blues-rock romp “Big City Girls,” a co-write with Popper, Tad Kinchla and Wilson. Popper says of the opening track, “Having worked with Aaron before, it is so rewarding to be on another’s track as just a vocalist. It allows you to put yourself completely into the emotional state of the writer, which I find thrilling and don’t often get to do.” Renowned Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith co-penned four tunes with various members of the band: the jangling and heartfelt blues-pop rocker “Recognize My Friend” (music by Hill, words by Sexsmith and Popper), the Santana-flavored, organ fired “Devil in the Details” (music by Chan Kinchla, words by Sexsmith and Popper), the exuberantly optimistic jam “Things Are Looking Up” (music by Tad Kinchla, words by Sexsmith and Popper) and the rustic, front porch folksy “Love Is Everything (That I Describe)” (music by Sexsmith, words by Popper and Sexsmith). Popper explained, “For someone we’d never met, Ron seemed to get us instantly.”

Blues Traveler has a long history with Spin Doctors frontman Chris Barron, who went to high school with Popper in Princeton and originally played with the Blues Traveler singer in a group called Trucking Company. On Suzie Cracks The Whip, Barron contributes the easy jangling, Springsteenesque pop-rock gem “Saving Grace,” which includes the unforgettable lines, “I’m tired of songs about angels/I could use a punch in the face.” Blues Traveler also invited to the barn singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carrie Rodriguez, who wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics (with Popper) on the country influenced power pop tune “I Don’t Wanna Go.” Popper explains, “I actually caught a video of Carrie on that hip Austin music channel. This woke me from my sleep and was brilliant. I knew instantly that I had to meet and work with her.” The song features harmony vocals by American Idol Season 9 finalist Crystal Bowersox. These outside contributions set wonderful contrast to the tracks that Blues Traveler created “in-house” including the playful, reggae tinged “All Things Are Possible” (music by Popper and Chandler Kinchla, words by Popper), Ben Wilson’s country-blues-pop tune “Cover Me” and two songs whose soul is classic John Popper, the stomping warning “Nobody Fall In Love With Me” and the heartbreakingly poetic piano-vocal closer “Cara Let The Moon,” which Popper claims is the best song he’s written in the past decade.

OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Umphrey’s McGee first played at Summer Camp back in 2003. They’ve played the festival every year since, and will be back again to host the 2014 Summer Camp Music Festival, and perform for you guys all 3 days.

“Umphrey’s McGee stand revealed as consummate musical alchemists, deftly reconfiguring sounds from rock’s vast panoply of styles.” (Entertainment Weekly).

Fans who have followed Umphrey’s McGee for any period of time know that there are only two guarantees: you never know what you’re going to get, and Umphrey’s always delivers.

How else can a band be relentlessly innovative in both music and fan relations for 13-plus years? The latest expected twist arrives in the form of their newest studio album (and first with ATO Records) Death By Stereo (9/13), the follow up to 2009′s Mantis. Mantis surprised fans with a collection of music never before played, and surprised the music industry with an innovative marketing campaign that catapulted the album past the Heatseekers chart, debuting at #62 on Billboard’s “Top 200″ chart without any radio play or television appearances.

Death By Stereo‘s concise melodic approach and accessible songwriting is everything fans had hoped for, but not what anyone expected. Death By Stereo is disarmingly straightforward. Sure, you can dance to it, but the clever arrangements, meticulously crafted chordal interplay, and virtuoso instrumentation put Umphrey’s McGee in a category all their own.

Sometimes our dreams are so brilliant and our desires so mysterious that we lock them deep inside ourselves to feed and play with only when we sleep... As if acknowledging them in waking life will betray the veil of control we shroud around our lives. But sooner or later every thought becomes manifest, and every dream finds a way into this world, whether by will or by war.

The Heights started as a series of hang outs in New York where we would walk a lot, and talk a lot, and eat at bodegas. We explored the wilderness of our ideas, the steep and elegant climbs of our imagination, the desires we had trapped inside of us, and the murky mistakes that seem imperative to the process of becoming true....

We're based in Los Angeles now. We're not finished.

"Come with us on a trip through your inner dimensions…."

Electronic/World fusion dance trio Beats Antique brings you their new album and multi-media touring show A Thousand Faces, a journey beyond the sonic realm that’s part odyssey, part genre-warping rock opera. The album is an epic two-volume adventure that follows every stage of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey with sweeping and lushly textured new compositions. While the fully immersive show will carry audiences through the complete journey, A Thousand Faces – Act 1 represents just the first half of the monomyth, with the second volume due out next spring.

“A Thousand Faces is meant to be an adventure for the audience, a wild ride that takes them through these mystical lands all across the globe,” says David Satori, who formed the Bay Area-based group with fellow musician/producers Tommy Cappel and Zoe Jakes in 2007. A Thousand Faces – Act 1 features a carefully curated ensemble of guest artists, including PRIMUS vocalist/bassist Les Claypool, Sarod player Alam Khan (son of legendary classical Indian musician Ali Akbar Khan), and vocalists Morgan Sorne and long-time collaborator Lynx.

For Beats Antique—who have fused genres as disparate as flamenco, afrobeat, and French Gypsy jazz since their 2007 debut Tribal Derivations—taking on a musical interpretation of the monomyth was a prime opportunity to deepen their exploration of faraway cultures. “In Beats Antique we’re always trying to cross cultures and weave together a lot of different sounds,” says Satori. “So we were very much drawn to the fact that Joseph Campbell had studied traditions all over the world and found a link between so many different mythologies, from Native American to African to Southeast Asian.” Not only embodying the spirit of cross-cultural connection, A Thousand Faces merges a spectrum of musical styles—from Indian classical music to Balinese fusion to EDM—in a manner that’s both seamless and endlessly surprising.

DJ Green Lantern is “often associated with the word “Dope” – Jay-Z

What do Eminem, Nas, and Jay-Z have in common…besides incredible talent and worldwide success, they can all say they’ve had DJ Green Lantern crafting their shows as official DJ and musical director. From street mixtapes, to clubs, to radio to producing for platinum artists, DJ Green Lantern has become a globally recognized talent and tastemaker.

Ironically becoming a world famous DJ was someone else’s dream. Growing up, Green developed a reputation for being adept at chopping samples and having some of the hottest beats around. DJing was so far from his mind that he had to borrow crates from friends for his first gig, which he only initially agreed to do because it paid $500. Instantaneously finding that he had a knack for controlling the crowd, Green steadily built a reputation as the go-to party DJ in his area. However, his creative background and producer pedigree screamed for an outlet, which ended up being mixtapes. “Around ‘96, I made my first mixtape,” Green recalls. “I used four or eight-track recorders to do different shit. I never did a normal blend tape ever. I understood you have to stand out and so I started putting hooks in and switching stuff up.” Green’s trademarks quickly became his self-produced remixes with a cohesiveness that had many of his mixtapes sounding like albums. The overwhelming critical acclaim made him a rising star with bookers requesting his presence on the tables everywhere from Connecticut to Japan to all over Europe.

Nine years in the making, Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers have built a reputation for hard work and non-stop touring, playing music inspired by the roots of bluegrass while branching out into a sound uniquely their own. From lightning fast picking, to sentimental ballads—playing storied original material, traditional songs, and contemporary covers—The Prowlers’ live show leaves no one wanting.

Their most recent album “Breaking Ground” grew out of collaboration and time well spent, having completed it within months of multiple cross-country US tours and the band’s third trip to Europe. Produced by Greg Cahill (Grammy nominated band-leader of Special Consensus), with special guests Josh Williams (of Rhonda Vincent and the Rage) and Anders Beck (of Greensky Bluegrass), this recording packs punch after punch.

Corporations and the corporate elite have taken over your food!  We live in a fast food nation were the majority of processed foods have genetically modified ingredients. On May 24th, millions around the world are banning together to say no to this take over! Join us Saturday, 3pm, at The Soulshine Tent to RAGE AGAINST GMOs!!!
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology.  This technology privatizes the seed, placing a monopoly on agriculture which both disrupts access to food sovereignty globally and threatens the genome integrity of the foods of our ancestors.  This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature.  The alterations can harm balanced ecosystems, and are notorious as a mechanism for the sale of excessive pesticides that poison our commons; the air, water and soil.
ALL HUMANS HAVE A RIGHT TO GROW FOOD AND ONLY MOTHER NATURE CAN CREATE FOOD! Join us for a rally at Soulshine Tent : bring drums, costumes, signs and YOUR VOICE as we march across the grounds!

They are unquestionably a team of friends that traverse the country making music they enjoy. What makes Greensky different than Bluegrass? Poignant rural ballads about real people? Dobro tone that Jerry (Douglas or Garcia) would love? Distortion Pedals? Grit and attitude from a whiskey soaked card game? Indeed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Just outside the jazz mecca of Kansas City springs liberal oasis Lawrence, Kansas— separated only by the waves of wheat from the epicenter of the electronic music revolution in Colorado. Born in funk and bred in the digital age, live electronic duo The Floozies have burst onto the scene at a time when the industry needed them the most.

Brothers Matt and Mark Hill share the stage just as easily as they share a musical brain. Without a setlist, and without a word between them, Matt’s guitar is in lockstep with the thud of Mark’s kick. Endless looping and production builds the raw scenery upon which palm muted chugs, searing solos, and wobbling bass paint their dazzling array of colors.

G. Love & Special Sauce
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Twenty years after the release of their self-titled debut and eight years since their last live performance together, the original lineup of G. Love & Special Sauce return with their first album in nearly a decade. Built on the trio’s signature hip-hop blues sound, Sugar finds vocalist/guitarist/harmonica player G. Love (aka Garrett Dutton), upright bassist James “Jimi Jazz” Prescott, and drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens breathing new life into their groove-heavy, Chicago-blues-infused brand of stripped-down rock & roll. “The goal for the album was to make it really raw and immediate, with live takes and live vocals and everybody playing so that it all comes together in that intangible way,” says G. Love. “That’s what our music is all about.”

Recorded mainly at Brushfire Records’ “Solar Powered Plastic Plant” studio in Los Angeles, Sugar captures the unstoppable energy of a band who got their start in Boston bars in the early ‘90s and still play up to 150 shows a year. “We wanted to take it back to the old-school vibe of the first record, those rich, warm sounds from when we were rocking small clubs and going on that acoustic feeling,” says Prescott. To deepen that dynamic and push their sound into new directions, G. Love & Special Sauce called in guest musicians like Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo (who appears on three of the album’s tracks), soul/R&B singer/songwriter Marc Broussard, and the legendary vocalist Merry Clayton (best known for her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”). “Recording at Brushfire was one of those super-magical sessions—it just felt right and really true to the style of this band,” notes G. Love, who also recorded several of Sugar’s tracks in Seattle with Clemens and bassist Timo Shanko.

While most of the first songs G. Love penned for Sugar were written in response to a recent breakup, the album ended up morphing into a gritty but joyful look at the thrill and grind of getting by as a musician. At the album’s heart is the swaggering title track, which fuses Elmore James-inspired slide licks with big and bouncy hip-hop beats. That mood is matched on tracks like “Good Life” (a Bo Diddley-style jam powered by the fiery guitar work of David Hidalgo), “Saturday Night” (a steamy serenade to New York City, laced with sultry vocals by Alabama-bred folk/soul singer/songwriter Kristy Lee), and “Weekend Dance” (an all-out party anthem fueled by sweet and smoldering horns, co-written by Eric Krasno and featuring rapper Shamarr Allen). Meanwhile, “Too Much Month” serves as a brilliantly bittersweet ode to being broke (“I got too much month for the end of my money/And not enough money for the end of the month”), and “Nite Life” slyly warns of the dangers of rock & roll living in its groove-laden take on John Lee Hooker’s “Whiskey and Wimmin.”

Ties & Tassels Productions was created to bring our Chicago-land community variety shows for the masses. These shows include; Burlesque, Drag, Gender performance, Dance, Fire play and even Circus Sideshow performances. T&T exists to bring together a variety of performers from all backgrounds and troupes to perform independently at our shows and to raise funds for various causes. T&T is a strong supporter the GBLTQIA community. Gramatik
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Good music is felt and not heard. At an early age Slovenia born Gramatik showed precocious signs of a musician, absorbing radio transmissions of old Funk or Rhythm & Blues joints, and taking classic piano classes. Private piano lessons of early Rock and Rhythm & Blues helped him form the youngest band in history at his elementary school. While still in middle and high school he discovered Hip Hop and left his band to become one of the first MC’s on the Slovenian coast. By 1998 he and his classmate formed a duo called Bow Down and threw the first Hip Hop party in the history of his hometown. That same year he was also introduced to his first audio sequencing software program and with humble beginnings started to produce two years later. Captured by the craft and magic of producing he discovered sampling, which became his one true love in the music making process. Chopping up old Funk, Soul, Blues and Jazz tracks he used to listen to making something completely new became his forte.

Here Comes the Sun Stereo
Watch as Sun Stereo transforms in Sgt Pepper's for a very special Beatles set.

Sun Stereo is a 6 piece band hailing from Urbana, Illinois, consisting of o1 theatrical flunky and 5 jazz junkies. After graduating with a Musical Theater Composition degree from University of Illinois, Kelly McMorris (music, lyrics, vocals, keys) has been writing music, performing in a plethora of projects, and all the while canvassing the gutters and bowels of churches, saloons, and opera houses for the perfect concoction of thugs and miscreants to transpire his musical vision. In 2010, he reunited with Jesse Greenlee (drums, cymbals, vocals) and began fleshing out the prenatal bones of the first full length album, Rogue Satellite. After it’s completion, they tapped the veins of the University of Illinois Jazz program to procure the remaining pieces (Josh Houchin, bass, vocals; Adrian Barnett, bari sax; Euan Edmonds, trombone; Kevin Bourassa, Trumpet; Jon Griffith, bari sax) and bring the album’s nuances and grandiose intricacies to life on the stage.Sun Stereo delivers a hybridization of organic and electronic elements with Beatlesque vocal harmonies, electronic soundscapes, nu-age story book lyrics, and a funk your face off horn section. In the first year of existence, they have developed a fierce following and our quickly establishing themselves in the Midwest as a must see live show, reminiscent of a wedding reception on acid sans the chicken dance. Recently, they performed at Pygmalion Music Festival, Mumford & Sons Gentlemen of the Road Tour in Dixon, Il., and Summer Camp Music Festival. Currently, they are finishing their 2nd full length album expected out in the Spring of 2013 and are sewing their infectious anthems across the Midwest.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary as modern day rulers of old school funk, the seven-piece Brooklyn-based juggernaut Lettuce drops their third studio album Fly—a decidedly raging slab of relentless groove, hyper-charged syncopation and psychedelicized soul anthems. Having blown up stages from coast to coast last year, Lettuce entered Brooklyn recording studio The Bunker this winter with a fresh batch of road-tested material and a revitalized sound honed razor sharp by a year spent on the road.

“We’re more together and set to crush than ever before,” says drummer and chief songwriter Adam Deitch of the all-star group that he and his accomplished band-mates cut their teeth with back in their Berklee School of Music days. That much history, along with the A-list crop of projects that each member has taken on away from Lettuce, gives the group a bottomless well of musical ideas and unrivaled chemistry—in fact, referring to themselves as a band of brothers. “I was in a practice room at 16 with Kraz, Zoidis, Shmeeans and Deitch and it all clicked,” says “lead” bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes. “We all felt rhythms in similar ways. We were all about the pocket from day one.”

Stepping Into the Hoop & All About Body Rolls

Four friends brought together by a love of picking, singing and grinning, Acoustics Anonymous bridges the gap between groove and grass. Injecting gravity and soul into whatever they play, and coating it all with a shimmering layer of harmonies, the music can at one moment be raucous and at the next hushed. Whether its channeling the spirits of Jerry Garcia, Joe Cocker or James Taylor during a choice cover or melting it all together for an original, Acoustics Anonymous can be found first and foremost playing live: bringing people together and making them smile, sing, laugh and dance - that's what it's all about, right? The band features a rotating cast of drummers (Dave Clark of The Schwag, Sam Niehaus of Reelfoot, and on occasion, Rob Koritz of Dark Star Orchestra), so each show brings with it a varied style. The band formed in September 2012 and in its short career has shared bills with such renowned acts as Del McCoury Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Greensky Bluegrass, Cornmeal and The Giving Tree Band, as well as playing frequent shows with the slew of great talent in and around their hometown, St. Louis.

The Wood Brothers
OFFICIAL WEBSITE
ARTIST PAGE
Chris Wood had a scrap of a song — seemed like a chorus — scribbled in a notebook. He played it for his older brother, Oliver, who’d had a verse lying around he didn’t know what to do with. The two pieces, composed months apart, one in urban Atlanta and the other deep in the Catskills, dovetailed musically and lyrically: the verse about a man regretting chasing unattainable women, the high-lonesome, harmony-driven refrain of “When I die, I wanna be sent back to try, try again.”

“Neon Tombstone” wasn’t the first song that Chris, a founding member of jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood, and Oliver, formerly Tinsley Ellis’s guitarist, had written — since 2006, they’d released three studio albums of Americana as The Wood Brothers. But it was the first one they’d written like this. “This is how a song is supposed to come together,” Oliver remembers thinking. “There was some chance, some randomness, to it.”

The experience marked a deeper level of collaboration for The Wood Brothers, a newfound fraternal synchronicity that’s captured on their latest album, ‘The Muse.’ Within the first few bars of opener “Wastin’ My Mind,” which could pass for a lost cut from “The Last Waltz,” it’s clear the brothers are operating on a different plane than when we last heard them, on 2011’s ‘Smoke Ring Halo.’ The components are similar: the dialed-in vocal harmonies, Oliver’s gritty acoustic guitar, Chris’s virtuosic upright bass, the warrior poet lyrics. But here there’s a glue — a yellowy carpenter’s glue, one imagines — holding it all together. The cohesion comes from the brothers having spent the last two years on the road with new full-time member Jano Rix, a drummer and ace-in-the-hole multi-instrumentalist, whereas they relied on session musician-friends to fill out previous albums. Jano’s additional harmonies give credence to the old trope that while two family members often harmonize preternaturally, it takes a third, non-related singer for the sound to really shine. And then there’s Jano’s work on his literally patented percussion instrument, the “shuitar,” a shitty acoustic guitar rigged up with tuna cans and other noisemakers, which, in his hands, becomes a veritable drum kit.

Starting with debut ‘Ways Not To Lose,’ which NPR described as a collection of “gracious little songs [that] sound like they were born on a front porch during a beautiful sunset,” The Wood Brothers have made albums like you’re not supposed to anymore — recording mostly live, warts and all. But on ‘The Muse,’ they double down on the production values of a purer time. Whereas ‘Smoke Ring Halo’ was tracked with the musicians playing in separate rooms, here Chris, Oliver and Jano often circled around a tree of microphones, a couple feet apart from one another, and simply played the songs, with even the lead vocals being recorded on the spot. The arrangement is a producer’s nightmare — the different sounds bleed into the various mics, limiting mixing options and ruling out the possibility of fixing mistakes — but the band had two willing accomplices: legendary country musician Buddy Miller, who produced the album, and Nashville studio vet Mike Poole, who engineered.

“I just love how Mike and Buddy really embraced that idea,” Oliver says. Miller, an award-winning producer, guitarist and solo artist, has performed and recorded with icons such as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Oliver continues, “I hear little things that are out of tune or imperfect, and I love it. That’s what I like about old recordings – they just did it, and that’s what happened.”

From early in their childhood in Boulder, CO., Chris and Oliver were steeped in American roots music. Their father, a molecular biologist, would perform classic songs at campfires and family gatherings, while their mother, a poet, instilled a passion for storytelling and turn of phrase. The brothers bonded over bluesmen like Jimmy Reed and Lightnin’ Hopkins, but their paths, musical and otherwise, would diverge. Oliver moved to Atlanta, where he played guitar in cover bands before earning a spot in Tinsley Ellis’s touring act. At Ellis’s behest, Oliver began to sing and then founded King Johnson, a hard-touring group that would release six albums of blues-inflected R&B, funk and country over the next 12 years. Chris, meanwhile, studied jazz bass at the New England Conservatory of Music, moved to New York City and, in the early ‘90s, formed Medeski Martin & Wood, which over the next two decades would become a cornerstone of contemporary jazz and abstract music.

Swear and Shake
In a city that offers endless new sounds, New York-based band Swear and Shake’s loyal fan base and earnest talent have driven them on tours across the US and into the focal point of fawning critics. The band’s star seems to be continually on the rise, as they play premiere Manhattan and Brooklyn venues and release their fully-Kickstarter-funded LP, Maple Ridge, only a year after their formation.

Swear and Shake is Kari Spieler (vocals, lyrics, guitar), Adam McHeffey (vocals, lyrics, guitar, banjo, piano), Shaun Savage (electric bass), and Tom Elefante (percussion). The band formed in 2010 after Kari helped Adam record a demo one of his original songs, “Johnnie.” From that moment, they knew they were on to something good. Adam recruited longtime friends Shaun and Tom to flesh out the sounds behind Kari’s soulful, smoky voice and Adam’s catchy folk strumming.

The band was a hit from their first release in November 2010, a five track album aptly titled “Extended Play,” which received over 200,000 Creative Commons downloads in North American and Europe. In the first few months, favorite tunes like “Johnnie” and “Bones” started to pop up in covers on YouTube.

Newsday praised the band, comparing them to indie darlings Mumford & Sons and Bon Iver. New York’s The Deli described front lady Kari’s pipes as “gorgeously full,” and Brooklyn Belles compared her to “a young June Carter Cash.” David Malachowski of the Daily Freeman made clear that Swear and Shake is more than fun sounds and pretty faces. “A haunting postcard from a faraway, warmer place, Spieler’s moving, heartfelt delivery takes this to a higher place,” writes Malachowski. “Daring and direct, Swear and Shake points a finger at you, and you can’t help but respond. Well done.” Frost Click called the band’s EP a “treat” and writes, “There’s no denying the fact that Swear and Shake know how to make amazing sounds. The quartet has a knack for creating a wonderful balance of emotion, instruments, vocals and lyrics; making you want to listen more and more.”

Writing about their appearance at B.O.M.B. Fest opening for Weezer and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Connecticut’s Culture Cache called their sound, “expansive, majestic, harmony-heavy,” and music blog The Indie Kollection wrote, “Musical discoveries like these make me want to move to NY.” Luckily, there’s still time to make the move considering blog The Feast called them “a mainstay on the New York scene.”

Despite the band’s critical acclaim, attending a Swear and Shake show feels like a cozy, crowded room of old friends where a guitar is picked up as the last bottle is poured. Shows at New York institutions like The Living Room, Pete’s Candy Store, The Knitting Factory, Arlene’s Grocery, and the Bitter End have been raucous and full of laughter and dancing. Music blog Sounds That Matter, who had the band record a video for their site testified, “It took me one day to realize I was head over heels for this band.”

Using the crowd-funding site, Kickstarter, the band raised $5,250 ($750 over their goal) from over 100 individual donations to make their latest independent record. For Mountain Standard Time, there is one focus: making good, honest music. The organic process of expression—from heart to hands to ears—preserves the integrity of the finished product. While the band spends an exhaustive amount of time crafting and perfecting their material, they don’t pay any mind to the rules and confines of genre. With elements of Bluegrass, Prog Rock, Latin and Americana, attempting to categorize the band can be challenging. MST coined the term “free grass” so that they could stop focusing on labeling their music and stick to what they do best: playing it.

Since 2007, American Babies has been the mouthpiece for Philadelphia based musician Tom Hamilton. After spending the early 2000s building a national fan base fronting the electro-rock band Brothers Past, releasing two critically acclaimed albums, and averaging 150 shows a year, a change was in order. "Musically, I wanted to get back to the basics" he explains, "Get the song right, first. Then worry about the live show and how the music opens up from there."

Hamilton went back to his roots, rediscovering the Outlaw Country, Motown, and Grateful Dead records he grew up with, and assembled a pool of musicians to pull from for recording sessions and live performances. After two full-length LPs, an EP, and three years of touring, the American Babies are hitting their stride. The live band has been solidified with David Butler (Lee "Scratch" Perry) on drums, Adam Flicker (The Brakes) on keys, and Marc Friedman (The Slip) on bass. The band has shared the bill with numerous like minded acts such as Derek Trucks, Sheryl Crow, Umphrey's McGee, Railroad Earth, and The National to name a few.

Bassnectar
OFFICIAL WEBSITE

Bassnectar is one of the longest standing and most respected artists in American electronic dance music, commonly referred to simply as EDM. He is the original long hair behind the tables, having been in the game well before most of his contemporaries by amassing an epic fan base and having sold over 220k tickets to his solo shows alone in 2012. His art brazenly oversteps the bounds of contemporary EDM, pulling from a dynamic array of source material and attracting lovers of all genres, from dubstep to metal, punk rock, hip hop, and all forms of EDM (drum & bass, trip hop, etc) and beyond. His art is more than just an auditory experience; it serves to evoke all human senses with live shows that feature unparalleled light shows and awe-inspiring visual queues. Bassnectar intends to not only foster his own community of loyal Bass Heads, but also contribute to the global community at large through charity and social change by giving one dollar from every ticket sold to a non-profit, as part of his “Dollar Per Bass Head” Program

Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco-based DJ, producer and artist. Lorin, who released his first album in 2001, began the project as an open-sourced musical experiment exploring the interplay between music and community. His music covers any genre imaginable and fuses everything into an electro-synthesis of intense basslines and hypnotic soundscapes. Coming from a background in death metal, Ashton did not intend to approach EDM from a traditional standpoint. It was a very natural and unique progression. It is this openness to exploring new ways of creating dance music that has attracted droves of loyal fans to Bassnectar’s recordings and live performances. Being purposely limitless, Bassnectar is as diverse as he is heavy, as raw as he is meticulous, and as fierce as he is imaginary. Growing up in a Bay Area commune, Ashton initially identified with visual arts rather than music by creating movies with his dad’s camera at the age of 10. As his interest in all things creative grew, he bought a guitar and taught himself to play back cover songs and merge them- early versions of what came to be known as the “mash up”. During his first year of high school, Ashton honed his mastery of beats on a set of homemade drums and began incorporating the complex rhythm of Brazilian samba into his repertoire. This explorative take on music led to a deep involvement in the death metal scene of the 1990's. He started a band called Pale Existence and began playing and promoting underground shows. He also organized a local battle of the bands that inspired insane amounts of fun energy and crazy moshpits. In this pre-internet age, Ashton had gone from a commune, to high school (where he earned straight A’s), to his first musical community.

Conscious of not just being a musician, but an entertainer – something his father instilled in him in the family band – he certainly makes an impression live. But it’s the strength of his songwriting and musicianship, combined with that charm and personality that keep audiences coming back again and again.

With eclectic, cinematic songs that stir up images of the old West and urban cityscapes, the 12-track album feels like a game changer for a singer-songwriter, band leader, and Grammy nominated producer who stepped out of the sideman shadows with his 2011 solo debut “The Parade.” He likens “Good Man Down” to “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Like “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” his first album was lighthearted and fun with nods to the past. His second is darker, creepier, more bizarre and outrageous.

“My intention with my music, is to make futuristic electronic hip hop beats. The process I use comes from the school of thought from early hip hop, more specifically the late 80's early 90's - digging up old records and chopping them up to make something entirely new. That period influenced my beat making more than any. I then give my tracks that powerful electronic build out because it's fun, great for the dance floor, and I love doing it.

The coolest thing for me, is that I am with a crew who shares very similar views and is arguable the best at this style. I'm beyond thrilled to take part in the PLM movement.”

This Must Be the Band

“This Must Be the Band” is Chicago’s only and therefore best Talking Heads Tribute Band; only performing Talking Heads music, and, if possible, 3 to 4 hours at a time.

Formed in May of 2007, This Must Be the Band began by playing the cov- eted pizza joint circuit, the most notable of which was the city-famous Piece Pizza in Wicker Park. Since then, the band has expanded east to NYC and west to San Francisco.

This Must Be the Band has two main dishes on their menu: the first is a succulent “All-Request Show,” with a generous helping of audience partici- pation, flavored slightly by improvisation. The second is the hailed “Stop Making Sense Re-Creation,” where the band performs note-for-note and prop-for-prop the famous Talking Heads concert film from 1984. For three years running, the band has performed this show to a sold-out crowd at the Vic Theatre and Park West in Chicago.

This Must be the Band is extremely happy to play Talking Heads music night after night because the music is just that much fun. Not only has the lead singer (Charlie Otto) been called “the illegitimate son of David Byrne,” but the band boasts its very own Tina Weymouth (Jamie Jay), Bernie Worrell (Matt Gunsaulus), Adrian Belew (Otto), and Ednah Holt (Kasey Foster).
